Filofax Craving: The Original

Hi everyone!

All has been quiet on the Filofax front.  I haven't bought a single Filofax since I got the Pocket Malden in April.  The previous purchase before that was the Compact Chameleon in July 2012.  And in between, I've swapped, sold and gifted about 3 or 4 that weren't getting much use.  I haven't (much) felt the need to acquire any more since I have more than I can reasonably use.

Today, however, is a different story!  I've been seeing photos of the Original across the web, and it seems to be a Filofax that's right up my alley.  I love that it's a single piece of leather, no cardboard reinforcements, and that it lays flat straight out of the box.

It reminds me of my first ring binder that has about the same construction, and is still going strong.  I use it now to store top/side tabs, but I brought it out for you today to show you the leather.

I sincerely think this is the best way to make a leather ring-bound binder:  thick, single piece of leather, simple construction, sturdy rings and simple/functional layout.  I used this non-Filo binder a good 5 years before I got the real thing, and it has never once broke.  It cleans off easily, the rings work perfectly, and any dust/mildew (if it gets wet or is stored for a bit) wipes off easily.  The black hides dirt and imperfections well.  The only downside is the rust on the external ring mechanism, photo below.

Inside front cover has card slots
and small secretarial pocket.
Inside back cover has pen loop and
slot for a note pad.

Top view of the leather that shows stitching.

Bottom view.  Stitching is just to "close out" the leather around the sides.

Rust on the ring mechanism.

And those are the same reasons why I've been lemming the Original in Personal size.  I just can't make up my mind what color or finish (leather or patent) to get it in.  Pink of course is a first choice, but I have tons of pink already.  Black and brown are a close 2nd and 3rd choice since they're so classic.  But why, oh why doesn't it come in blue?

What about you who own the Original?  What do you think of it?  Is it as good as I think it is?

Thanks for visiting!

  1. Hi Doris! I'm just a rookie, getting my feet wet in the world of Filofax, but I can already see an improvement in "my ways", since starting my first planner... And I now enjoy winding down with my second planner at the end of the day, while I collect my thoughts, and re-assess what's ahead... Love your first planner, the quality, and how long it served you well... and how I've seen so many filo-bloggers and YouTubers still attached to their "first loves".. their first planners! It's sweet, really, and I just hope I feel the same way about mine someday!... Have a great weekend! ~tina

  2. Hi Tina! I couldn't bring myself to get rid if it. The store I got it from also doesn't nake them like this anymore. Enjoy your 'Filofax-ing'! Thanks for the comment.
